Anyone have recommendations on apparel?

The problem that I've encountered during the first half of the course is not being able to have the sweat wick away from the skin as effectively as I would like, and the problem that I've encountered during the second half of the course is mild/moderate hypothermia due in part to the combination of the sweat on the skin, the colder air, and the higher windspeeds.

Thanks in advance,

Yes, I'm a clyde but still planning to try Mt. Washington. I rode about 5,000 miles last year and have done some centuries, though not all that much in terms of hillclimbing.

Near where I live is Great Blue Hill, which is about a 10% average grade though for only .75 miles, 1/10th of Washington's length. A friend has suggested that I do two things:

1) as many consecutive hill repeats on Great Blue as I can. Of course this is a lot easier than Washington itself because you rest on the descents, but it's the closest I can get without driving for hours to Ascutney. So far I've worked up to 6 repeats, but that's with not quite 1;1 gearing.

2) extrapolating from how long it should take me to do Mt. Washington based on the duration of the hill repeats (probably 2+ hours), sustain for that amount of time my average heartrate for the hill repeats (upward portion only, of course, which is about 160). So far I've done that for about an hour and a half, but I definitely need to push it for at least 2 hours and probably 2.5 as I imagine I'll slow down.

I've also signed up to climb Ascutney, which sounds like the next best thing to a Washington practice ride (which I can't schedule).

The other thing of course is dropping weight, which has been a bit tricky while training because it makes me hungry. But that's probably the #1 thing I could do to help my chances of finishing.

Hello all,

I have a setup that was provided to me by Red Jersey Cycles. The crank worked with my Felt Z1 which takes and english style bottom bracket. The crank is a mtb crank with a 26 tooth ring. From my Dura-Ace 7900 crank it added about .30 lbs including the BB. This season I have to use a different setup due to my new bike. Please email me if you are interested and I can send you photos. I used the setup twice. Once for the practice ride and another for the climb. Everything looks brand new. The equipment is also located in Maine.

I hate to introduce a negative vibe but I was wondering if many riders take breaks on the way up the mountain? It will be my first time and I'm not sure I'm up to the task of a non-stop ride , one reason being my gearing which I can't afford to modify--34 by 36. I know that's plenty low for many but m from what I've read, weaker riders need lower.
Of course, if one does take a break it must be diffcult to get going again without the aid of a friendly push!

Does wheel weight make that much of a difference? I currently have Mavic Ksyrium Elites which weigh in at about 1550 grams. I could spend the money (a lot of money) and get a set of Zipp 202s. But they are tubulars, not clinchers. And the weight savings is only 450 grams. Seems like a lot of cash for what is a relatively small amount of weight. I know saving weight on something that spins, like wheels or pedals, is multiplied. But can it be worth that much?

I'm a middle-aged century rider who goes uphill OK (rides like Colorado's "Triple Bypass", "Assault on Mt. Mitchell" and Wisconsin's "Horrilby Hilly Hundreds"). Training: Lots of miles, a fair amount of hill or interval work, proper recovery periods and eating/sleeping well. Then just remember to hydrate and eat on the (8+ hr) ride. Not very systematic, but it has worked for me.

I would assume training for Mt. Washington is much more about increasing threshhold power for an hour. Like training for a time trial: power intervals that get longer as fitness increases.

I also assume, I'd better get used to maintaining threshhold power at a lower cadence. Hope my knees won't mind!

What do you all do / recommend?

Thanks ahead of time,
